Appointed as the pioneer Professor of Ophthalmology in the University of Ilorin, on 26 September 2011, Abdulraheem Olarongbe Mahmoud concomitantly serves as a Consultant Ophthalmologist and Vitreo-retinal Surgeon at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Ilorin. He has over twenty-five years of teaching, research, and administrative experience in the University. He was a Head of Department, Chairman of Board of Management of University of Ilorin Press, Chairman University Health Education Committee, and currently (2026) Chairman of Unilorin Committee on Examinations, Scholarships and Endowment. Prior to joining the university in 2000, he had served as the National Coordinator for the Prevention of Blindness in Nigeria from 1994 to 1999. His areas of research interest include vitreoretinal surgery and application of artificial intelligence in medical education. He is well-published in reputable national and international journals including the Lancet. He won the University of Ilorin Best Researcher prize in 2012 with a gift of a brand new salon car, the same year he delivered the first-ever inaugural lecture from the ophthalmology department on 12 March 2012. He has co-supervised to completion 25 Residency Fellowship Dissertations, a Doctor of Medicine thesis, and a PhD thesis. He was the External Assessor for 17 professorial appointments across 15 public universities and an External Interviewer in a professorial assessment in another. He is a member of several professional bodies locally and internationally, the latest ones being the Charter Foundation memberships of both the National Association of Artificial Intelligence Practitioners (2024) and the Association of Cyber Security Practitioners (2025).
