Appointed as the pioneer Professor of Ophthalmology on 26 September 2011, Abdulraheem Olarongbe Mahmoud concomitantly serves as a Consultant Ophthalmologist and Vitreo-retinal Surgeon at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Ilorin. He has had twenty-four years of teaching, research, and administrative experience. He was a Head of Department, Chairman of Board of Management of University of Ilorin Press, and Chairman University Health Education Committee. His areas of research interest include vitreoretinal surgery and application of artificial intelligence in medical education. He is well-published in reputable national and international journals including the Lancet. He won the University of Ilorin Best Researcher prize in 2012, the same year he delivered the first-ever inaugural lecture from the Department of Ophthalmology. He has supervised to completion 25 Residency Fellowship Dissertations, a Doctor of Medicine thesis, while a PhD thesis under supervision is nearing defense. He was the External Assessor for 17 professorial appointments across 15 public universities and an External Interviewer in a professorial assessment in another. He is a member of several professional bodies locally and internationally, the latest being the Charter Foundation memberships of both the National Association of Artificial Intelligence Practitioners (2024) and the Association of Cyber Security Practitioners (2025).
